After re-looking at a 1984 murder case, Houston police homicide investigators have discovered that suspect committed suicide one year after the crime. Police said the suspect, Sergio Candanoza, shot himself on August 19, 1985 a year after he allegedly shot Saul Acevedo. Sergeant A. Carrillo reported that Acevedo and Candanoza were involved in a physical confrontation in the parking lot of Leslie’s Club at 6600 Southwest Freeway service road on June 24, 1984. After the fight, Candanoza retrieved a gun from his car and again confronted Acevedo. When the two struggled for the gun, Candanoza was shot in the hand. He gained control of the weapon and shot Acevedo in the neck. Candanoza then left the scene in a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo, but was arrested a short time later. Acevedo died at the scene. Charges of murder were never filed against Candanoza in this incident. Instead, he was charged with reckless conduct for pulling the gun on the driver of the Monte Carlo and forcing the driver to help him flee the scene. |
