Homeless man struck, killed by hit-and-run driver

February 10, 2008

A homeless man was struck and killed while walking along the feeder road to Highway 59 Saturday night.

Witnesses said the man was pushing a shopping cart down the feeder near Fountain View at around 12 a.m. when an unidentified vehicle hit him and fled the scene.

Passing motorists called police. When they arrived, the victim was dead.

I am saddened by the fact that this man will probably not be missed by anyone. No funeral, no one to stand at his side and talk about how he touched their lives, how they laughed together or cried together. Possibly not a tear shed for someone that was at one time someones child with big dreams. We don’t know what happens to homeless people and why they are where they are. Some of us live week to week and are only a paycheck away from being homeless and face it if you don’t have family to help you, where do you go? I wish this country would learn compassion. And as for the hit and run driver, it may have been an accident but it became a crime when they left and did not try to help. I hope they get caught and/or have to live with what they have done for the rest of their life. God Bless that poor man. I hope he is at peace now.
