Bartering in a down economy

I’m intrigued by a segment I saw this morning on the Today show and I’m looking for feedback from you. Are you bartering? How? I’m curious so shoot me an e-mail at alehtone@wcnc.com

With the down economy, everyone is looking for ways to save money. In fact, postings on Craig’s List are up 100 percent since January.

Bartering is back and the best place to go is online.

“If you don’t go to the Internet you’re missing out on potentially millions of opportunities,” said Farnoosh Torabi, thestreet.com, in an interview with Matt Lauer.

Torabi says these are the best sites for bartering:

u-exchange.com for cars and home renovations
favorpals.com is geared toward services. For example, swap golf lessons for tennis lessons
swaptree.com has 1.5 million items listed for trade like books, CDs, DVDs and video games
friendlyfavor.com is trying to get in on the social networking craze with information on exchanging favors like asking for volunteers or gift donations

Torabi says the best place to start bartering is with a group of friends or family.

Many are going to web sites like swapstyle.com or dignswap.com to exchange clothing.

If you’re going to barter, Torabi says you need to be specific on what you want or what you can offer. You also need to keep records and file with the IRS.
