Chilling out in Shanghai

8:50 PM Tue, Aug 26, 2008 |
Stephanie Stricklen

I'm officially on vacation through the first week in September!

I landed in Shanghai less than 24 hours ago and am overwhelmed at the size of this city. It's hard to make Beijing look small, but Shanghai does. I came on the heels of that terrible rainstorm here that flooded the streets and killed a woman who drowned in a tunnel. The rain is gone and you wouldn't know what happened here if you didn't read about it in the local papers...

Golden Moments

Joe Becker

By Joe Becker

I had a great time watching the Gold Medal game between the US and Spain. Thanks to NBC for broadcasting it live. I was able to watch it here at the station as soon as I got off the air.

It was a terrific basketball game and you might say it was as good as gold. I was happy for team USA and Blazers coach Nate McMillan, who is an assistant coach with team USA.
It was also great to see Rudy Fernandez pla...

The 2008 Bejing Olympic Games; almost a memory.

Stephanie Stricklen

I'm sitting here in the NBC workspace crossing my fingers that Elsie Windes can make it here today. The silver medal winning women's water polo team was supposed to stop by last night about 9:30pm, but never made it. Elsie knows I'm trying to get an interview with her to send back via satellite (for all you Elsie fans back home)!! That's been one of the best parts about covering these games; bringing you the stories of how Oregon and SW Was...

"Sometimes life throws you hurdles..."

By Katherine Cook

The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat.

I believe few track & field events exemplify both quite as tangibly as the 100 meter hurdles. It's an opinion I formed through my own experience, from the time I cleared my first hurdle as a skinny 13-year-old, to my last 100 meter hurdles race as senior at Western Oregon University. So when I watched ...

Kobe & LeBron Drop Some Scary

2:22 AM Thu, Aug 21, 2008 |
Stephanie Stricklen

When I got into work this morning one of the feed point guys (the people who are THE clearinghouse for video) wanted to show me some more fun stuff from our basketball players in the mixed zone. It made me laugh-- maybe you, too.

Anyway, you'll have to sit through a minute on the Kobe/Steph bet discussion before we get to the behind-the-scenes mixed zone video.

Here's the URL so you can watch it:

Olympic Moments

I just watched Stephanie Stricklen do another fantastic live shot. It was pouring down rain in China
and Steph had fun with it. It's not easy being on the road, that far from home, for that long and keep the energy up on a daily basis...but Steph has...and her Live shots and stories are always quality. She's also working with photographer Ken McCormick, who is one of the best in the business.

Never Bet Against Kobe

2:34 AM Tue, Aug 19, 2008 |
Stephanie Stricklen

These things just don't happen to me. I'm not cool. I'm not buddies with Bob Costas. I don't have gobs of money. And, I have never, ever been to an Olympic event as a spectator. Until last night. Read on:

I rolled into the media entrance for the basketball venue to see Team USA play Germany. I had a ticket and was making my merry way to parts of the venue unknown. I showed my ticket to a nice Chinese volunteer who was seating p...

Kobe, LeBron, Jason, Nate & Me.

Stephanie Stricklen

Which one of these things doesn't fit in. Do you remember that game/song-- was it Sesame Street? Anyway, I digress.

WOW. Wow. wow....

I had a great day yesterday. First of all.. a small army of you voted and made it clear that I was supposed to, no.. destined to.. eat a scorpion. Which I did. I'll include that in one of my 5pm reports.. probably Tuesday because I have big plans for Monday.

Monday I want to show y...

I'm working on a foodie-lovers story that has a Portland connection.. so, I need to know before I go shoot it:

What do you want me to eat?!!

Your choices include a scorpion, cricket, or snake. We'll make that a part of the story. You have about 24 hours or so to let me know before we shoot it so........ click on the comments tab below and cast your vote.

Fencing Foxes

Stephanie Stricklen

Today I almost got electrocuted.

There is something wrong with the setup on the roof of our workspace. At first I thought maybe the metal clasp on the IFB box was cutting into my skin. But when I grabbed the mic I started to get the same tingly, stabby prickles on my hand-- at which point I just dropped everything on the ground and sat there and whined about it for 30 minutes.

We think we have it under con...

My Olympic Heroes: Mariel, Becca, and Sada!

11:29 PM Sat, Aug 09, 2008 |
Stephanie Stricklen

Wow. I mean WOW. I've only been to two Olympic events EVER in the 4 Olympics I've covered. Fencing in Athens when Mariel won the gold.. and fencing in Beijing...... when Mariel won the gold.

I'm seriously giddy.

Mariel, Becca, and Sada all rocked the house!! Mariel and Becca are both from the Portland area.. Sada hails from Atlanta.

Check out this >> Continue reading: My Olympic Heroes: Mariel, Becca, and Sada!

Showtime at Opening Ceremony

3:29 AM Fri, Aug 08, 2008 |
Stephanie Stricklen

The workspace is buzzing as we get ready for Opening Ceremony here in an hour and a half. The streets are jam packed, everyone is in a great mood, and I have never had so many people stop to take my picture. I think it's supposed to be the other way around, but I'm having a blast. Today will be a marathon day as I need to do two fast-turn stories that you can watch tonite (Friday) at 5pm and during the late news.

The first story at ...

Busy Day At The Office... I mean Olympics.

3:50 AM Tue, Aug 05, 2008 |
Stephanie Stricklen

We're shooting stories right and left and gearing up to hopefully catch up with as many local athletes as we can. In the meantime.. a few observations about Beijing.

1) Not a lot of folks talk on thier cell phones here. They have them, but the Chinese people don't really yak away while they're shopping or walking like we do in the states.

2) Bicycle helmet makers, listen up! You've got a SERIOUSLY untapped market here. If I...

Internet Connectivity at the Olympics

1:44 AM Sun, Aug 03, 2008 |
Stephanie Stricklen

Well-- this is why we come early. We're having major internet connectivity issues. In fact, I'm typing this as a Word document in the hopes I can just upload it when it's time.

The following things have happened to me in my first two days here:

a) I had my arm rolled up in a taxi cab window as I passed my hotel card info through the passenger window to the driver to see if he'd take us (some won't). He couldn't understand wh...
