Best Mexican Restaurant in the Portland area Blog

In honor of the Cinco de Mayo celebration, I thought it would be appropriate to tap into the minds of our viewers again, to find out where the best Mexican food in town can be found.

Perhaps you prefer a sit-down dining experience that starts with some chips and guacamole. Maybe you follow that up with a full entree of enchiladas, beans, and rice. You cap off the meal with some sweet, delicious flan. Of course, you'll need a couple of margaritas along the way to wash it all down.

Then again, maybe your favorite Mexican meal is simply a couple of tacos to go, packed with chicken or shredded beef, from the taco stand a couple of blocks from where you work.

As for me, I'm drawn to the one-of-kind asparagus tamales courtesy of the gang from Canby Asparagus Farm, who are also now the proud owners of Casa de Tamales at 10605 SE Main Street in Milwaukie.

Let's get back to you though. What is your choice for best Mexican restaurant in the Portland area? Whether it's somewhere along the Oregon Coast, or hidden away in the Portland suburbs, or right in the heart of the city itself... I want to hear from you!!!

So please click on the comments link below, and post your nomination for "Best Mexican Restaurant in the Portland area" now!!!!!

Area's Most Romantic Restaurant Blog

For whatever the reason, I'm not as passionate about romantic dining spots, as I am pizza places and breakfast joints... and yet somehow I still convinced my wife that I was a good catch.

I can tell you though, the most romantic dinner experience my wife and I have ever had took place at Fratelli, located in Portland's Pearl District on NW Hoyt between 12th & 13th (1230 NW Hoyt).

Now, part of that may have been where we were in our relationship at the time. It was our first Valentine's Day together... still more than a year away from our wedding... a good 2-1/2 years before the arrival of our twin boys.

Then again, the atmosphere at Fratelli certainly added to the evening. Warm, cozy, candle lit... all the elements you think of when you're picturing a romantic dinner. Plus, the food was great. We had heard before we went that their Italian menu selections were on the money, and we definitely weren't disappointed.

But enough about me... let's hear from you!!! What is your pick for the area's most romantic restaurant? And by "area", I'm not just talking about the city of Portland itself. Again, I'm talking about our entire viewing area... Vancouver, Salem, the Coast, Eastern Oregon, Bend, Washington County, Yamill County, Clackamas, Sherwood, St. Helens... wherever your favorite romantic restaurant is, I want to hear about it.

So please click on the comments link below, and post your nomination for "Area's Most Romantic Restaurant" now!!!!!

Best Breakfast Spot in Town Blog

I've been saying for years, and continue to believe, that the best breakfast spot in town is Milo's City Cafe, located in Northeast Portland on NE Broadway in the middle of the block between 13th & 14th.
I was initially introduced to Milo's about 6 years ago. My first visit also resulted in my first eggs benedict experience. Why it took me so long to try this popular breakfast dish, I don't know. Now I've been spoiled for life. I can't order eggs benedict anywhere else, because nowhere else do they make them quite as good as Milo's.
Not to mention, Milo's has the ultimate benedict variation... the Crab Cake Benedict!!! It is, quite simply, the nicest thing you can do for your sense of taste during your first meal of the day.
I have also been fortunate to meet the owner of Milo's, Loren Skogland, and have worked with him on a couple of early morning segments over the years. Loren is as genuinely kind as his menu is genuinely delicious. I feel fortunate to have gotten to know him, and to have been introduced to his restaurant.

So the question remains, where do you think the best breakfast spot in town is? And by "town", I'm not just talking about Portland. I'm talking about our entire viewing area... Vancouver, Salem, the Coast, Eastern Oregon, Bend, Washington County, Yamill County, Clackamas, Sherwood, St. Helens... wherever it is that you love to eat breakfast, I want to hear about it.

Who has the best pizza in the Portland area?
That's the question we posed this morning during my segments on Newschannel 8 at Sunrise.
My vote goes to "Escape from New York Pizza" on NW 23rd between Hoyt & Irving Streets, and I showed my allegiance to them on the air by broadcasting live from their shop.
Thanks, Chris, for opening the doors at 4:30am, and letting us do our thing.

The question remains... what do you think?
I received a lot of e-mails from viewers who weighed in on the discussion.
Below are some (many) of the responses. If you'd like to share your thoughts on the best pizza place in the Portland area, please post your comments on this blog.
Thanks!!

The best pizza to be had is in Stayton Or. It's Apizza on 3rd st. The owner was trained in New Haven and worked at Pepe's apizza. It's just like typical east coast pizza, thin crust with the slight char on the bottom. They are struggling because nobody knows about them. Maybe you can help.

It's called Bortolami's Pizzeria. It's in Hazel Dell, Vancouver on 99th st. and NE 9th Ave. It's real easy to get to just take I-5 exit 5. Ya can't miss it. They have a racing and antique bike theme. It's pretty cool.

If you have an opportunity to sample their pizza I recommend the Four Seasons or the Pizza Margherita!!!

Good morning Drew !
Couldn't resist to comment about the absolutely best Pizza in Vancouver, WA. The 'Blind Onion' is hands-down the best pizza you'll ever eat. . On any given night you'll have a challenge parking because it's always crowded to the max, not for the funky atmosphere, but for the outstanding pizza. The crust is perfect-'crunchewy', and whether you get the'Vegetarian' with artichoke hearts, red onions, mushrooms, olives, etc., or the standard pepperoni, you won't be disappointed. Our favorite: 'Sausage & peppers' has red & yellow sliced peppers, red onions, & Italian sausage-delicious !

The BEST Pizza around is at Abby's Legendary Pizza of Newberg!! Has a great, crispy thin crust and the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. They only use fresh ingredients and people come from all around for Abby's Pizza!! It's on Hwy 99 on the way through Newberg - on the way to the coast or wine tasting!! Drew, call and let them know you're on your way and they'll have one ready for you!! :) Lisa

By far, Nonna Eilias in Aloha has the very best pizza in the tri-county area! You have to give it a try, unlike any pizza you will ever try! A very hearty pizza with a crust that is to die for I promise.
This resteraunt has been in Aloha for over 20 years, really authentic Italian. The owners secret sauce comes down from Nona Emilia, his grandma.

Stark Street Pizza is the best place to have pizza in Portland. It's on SE 92nd and Stark. The pepperoni pizza is the best because they use a lot of small 1/2 inch slices of pepperoni that curl up into little grease bowls. Yum!

So I got to take a tour of the brand new Portland IKEA this morning.

The Grand Opening of this highly anticipated retailer is scheduled for NEXT Wednesday, July 25th at 9am. Although, apparently some people can't wait, because IKEA management is expecting die-hard shoppers to start lining up and camping out outside the store a few days before!!!

Back to my "behind-the-scenes" tour. It was pretty impressive to say the least.
280,000 square feet of furniture, kitchen ware, appliances, etc.
A Supervised Children's Play Area
and my favorite part...
a full service in-store restaurant with breakfast, lunch, and dinner service!!!

Want to get a sneak peak of the new IKEA yourself?
I haven't added anything to this blog in over 6 weeks.
Fortunately, some die-hards have continued to add their comments, so the overall content has at least been updated a bit.

I could blog about many a topic on this particular Friday like :

1) I'm going to be a dad this fall... to TWINS!!! I mentioned this already on the air.
I think I need to devote more time though to my thoughts on this. How's this for now... I'm VERY excited!!
*not my wife's stomach, but you get the point.

2) At the request of our internet site manager, Mr. Frank, I now have a MySpace page.
http://www.myspace.com/drewcarney
It's currently pretty weak as far as MySpace pages go. Friends other than Mr. Frank, MySpace founder Tom, and a local actress named Audrey (who I've never met) might help.

3) Recent viewer comments on the Blog.

Let's go with #3, and get back to the others later.

Here's a look at the most recently posted comment on the blog along with my response to this particular viewer (Michael).
By the way, I personally respond to almost EVERYONE who contributes to this blog.

I enjoy watching you but there are some things that really bug me. You are always saying "i don't have much time" which wastes time. And not to mention, we don't really care. Just wrap it up smoothly.

You really don't get much time....you start explaining something and you have to wrap it up. It would be nice to have longer segments. They don't need to keeps replaying the same stories over....

Hey Michael,
Thanks for the suggestion. You know my wife basically made the same comment to me the other night in regards to mentioning on the air about not having much time or how the producer is telling me to wrap... so I know you're not alone in that thought.
My thinking there was that I was just being upfront with the audience... kind of bringing you "behind-the-scenes" so to speak... like, "Hey, this is live, this is real, and as much as I'd like to spend more time on this topic or with this particular guest, the bottom line is there's someone in my ear telling me to shut the heck up."
I'll definitely try be more conscious not to "overuse" this tactic.

Thanks again for watching,
Drew

P.S. Do I dare ask what other things "really bug you"? You mentioned things with an "S" at the end. Keep in mind, I'm having a pretty good Friday, so my good mood is at stake here.

Alright... it's been two weeks since I started back on the air, and two weeks since I last wrote a blog entry...
There's a formula here... fewer hours of sleep = less time blogging.
I think I have some good material to get things going again though... angry, hate-filled blog comments.

Here's the deal... I've posted comments from everyone who has entered one to this point. The only time I haven't posted a comment in its entirety, is when a viewer makes "negative" comments about someone other than myself. I don't want this space to be a place to bash other people...

Me... I'm an open target.
Gratefully, the response to my return to local morning TV has been overwhelmingly positive to this point, both on this blog and in the e-mails I have received directly.
BUT... I know reading nothing but glowing praise can get old, SO... just in case you missed them, and in an effort to spice things up... here again are the two (and only two) NEGATIVE comments posted on the blog thus far:

You seem to have a lot of friends posting here. I am not one of them. You are not funny, not cute and not welcome when I want news in the morning not any naked part of you showing. You come off as obnoxious and I can't believe KGW has stooped so low as to let you have regular airtime. Now I turn to Channel 6 when your face appears on my screen. Too much of you and I'll switch for good.

Well... after six months of sitting on the sidelines, I'll be back on Portland's early morning television airwaves tomorrow to join the cast of Northwest Newschannel 8 at Sunrise (Mondays-Fridays, 5am-7am).

Of course, it's not like I've been relaxing at some resort destination since the beginning of September.

Me "swimming" in 2-feet of water off Maui before September.

My previous contract with my former station prevented me from being on the air here at Channel 8 to this point, but the "non-compete' clause said nothing about contributing to the internet.
(I'm assuming they're re-wording their contracts there now.)
(I just used they're, their, and there in the same sentence... feel free to let me know if I used them properly or not.)

As a result, I've been producing a daily feature segment for KGW's website for the past six months. The web segments have been a blast to put together, providing us with some creative freedom that the limitations of live TV don't normally allow.
My photographer Steve Hanson (who, by the way, is one of the reasons I'm happy I made the switch to 8) put together a few of our most memorable moments in the field so far, in a "Best Of" segment that we'll show on the air as part of tomorrow's TV debut.
You can look at the segment right now on-line by checking out the following link:
http://www.kgw.com/sharedcontent/VideoPlayer/videoPlayer.php?vidId=124118&catId=131

Now, despite not being able to use my name, face, or voice on TV to this point, KGW has still managed to promote my hiring on their airwaves through the clever use of the now infamous crate.

I know many of you are familiar with the crate promotions, because the most common line I hear when I'm out on the street these days is, "Hey, Drew, they let you out of the crate?"

I think one of the highlights of tomorrow's KGW-TV debut will be a pre-produced story we put togther that chronicles what life in the crate has been like for the past six months. At least I hope it's a highlight. You can tune in tomorrow to be the judge yourself.

A lot of people have asked me what time exactly I'll be "coming out" of the crate tomorrow morning. In the spirit of good TV promotion I have to say you'll need to watch the entire "Sunrise" show (which tomorrow begins at 4:30am).

I sincerely appreciate all the positive response I've received through this blog and the overwhelming number of personal e-mails from viewers who have expressed how much they've missed seeing me on their TV sets in the morning and how they're willing to change their viewing habits to catch me on NW Newschannel 8 @ Sunrise.

Your loyal support couldn't come at a better time. We're in the final days of the February TV ratings period (aka February sweeps), and while my new station has a comfortable lead over my former station in the race to win the 5am hour, we're in a dead tie in the even more critical battle to win the 6am hour.

So if I haven't said it before, let me say it now... Please watch on Tuesday from 4:30am-7am.
Please?
Thank you!!

Back on the Air Soon Blog

Thanks again to everyone who has contributed to my blog in recent weeks.
I normally respond directly to individual questions, but in some cases, there's no e-mail address to reply to.
That was the case with the following comment from "Tanya"...

I used to watch a certain morning show every day. I had stopped watching for a little bit and when I came back you were gone! At first I thought maybe you were on vacay, or possibly sick. After a while I finally asked my mother if she knew what had happened, and she said she knew you had gotten married and that was it. Long story short, I finally remembered to Google your name and I've found yah! I miss my Drew Carney in the morning! Hope your new venture works out for you! What time does it air?

Posted by: Tanya at February 12, 2007 08:54 AM

To answer Tanya's question... I'll officially join NW Newschannel 8 @ Sunrise on Tuesday morning, February 27th (less than 2 weeks away!!). I'll contribute a couple of live reports each hour of the show between 5-7am and possibly an additional segment as part of our local Today Show cut-ins between 7-9am.

Also, Tanya mentioned my getting married this past summer, which (contrary to certain rumors) had nothing to do with my leaving Channel 12. In fact, my lovely wife actually works for my former station... not in news, but in another department.

Having your significant other work for your direct competition isn't exactly ideal. As you can imagine, she would have rathered me stay then leave... but, needless to say... it didn't work out that way.

Now we have something to talk about, people!!
Here's one of the recent comments to my last blog asking for suggestions on what I should do my first day back on the air (***again Tues., Feb. 27th***):

I deleted "Kristin's" e-mail address as a professional courtesy, but feel free to use this space to personally respond to her incredibly thoughtful and considerate idea.

In the meantime, I looked at a profile shot of my nose, and all I have is one word...
WOW... it is pretty messed up... all hooked & crooked
But, I got this far with it, so I'm keeping it, darn it!!
Plus, it doesn't look that bad from the front... my buddy's daughter doesn't seem to mind it...

A CALL FOR FEEDBACK BLOG

Despite the ability to ramble on endlessly, I vow to keep this blog short.
I have to meet my wife at the grocery store in 8 minutes and I'm at least 20 minutes away.
Is that type of irrelevant, personal information acceptable as far as blog entries go?
Is anyone reading this?
Is anyone there?
I received more comments than I could post to my original blog entry last month, but nothing, zilch, nada, nothing since!!
What's up? I'm beginning to feel a bit self-conscious.
By the way, I'm officially back on the air as part of the NewsChannel 8 at Sunrise morning show on Tuesday, February 27th.
Any ideas or suggestions as far as what I should do my first day back on the air?

It should be noted, no matter how popular the idea, I will NOT allow myself to be tased again!!

Bowling with Bubba Blog

I got to take part in a great event this past weekend...
The 5th Annual Bowling with Bubba fundraiser, hosted by KUPL's afternoon drive host, Rick "Bubba" Taylor. The event raised money for Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland.
They posted this picture of me from the event on Saturday on the KUPL website...

I remember that throw... I believe it wound up in the gutter. You can check out more pictures from the event, by clicking on this link... http://www.kupl.com/pages/192188.php?imageGalleryXRefId=86711

I was paired up with a great volunteer at the event named Denise, whose daughter Samantha is scheduled for surgery at the Hospital this Wednesday. If you're one who says their prayers, maybe you could remember to say one for Samantha.

I also met a bunch of viewers, who all had the same question, "When are you going to be on the air?" The answer, like I told Marti here, is the end of February!!!

Thanks again to the gang at KUPL for inviting me out to bowl. I hope they ask me to come out again next year!!!

Blogging for Beginners

So this would be blog entry # 3 over a 3 week period.
I don't think that's a very good rate.
I need to pick up the pace a bit... at least I know Frank (KGW internet site manager) thinks I should.
More frequent and less wordy I believe was his suggestion.

I did want to come back on and thank those who responded to my original blog. I just weeded through the group and published the ones I felt were publish-worthy.
Just a heads-up... I won't publish any remarks regarding my replacement at "the other station" (as many of you have referred to my previous place of employment).
Bottom line... he's doing the best he can in a new environment and as easy as the "fun" news seems to be, I can tell you from experience, it ain't always that easy!!

Anyway, here's a link to some of the comments I've received so far:
http://www.beloblog.com/KGW_Blogs/drewcarney/2007/01/whats_a_blog.html#comments
Feel free to comment on the comments and keep the communication going... that's how a blog is supposed to work, right?
